Metric System is 300 Years old. Maybe.

My Today in History gadget on my iGoogle homne page says that France established the Metric system in 1799 on today's date. That would make it 300 years old today!

However, Wikipedia says that France adopted the Metric system in 1791.

Perhaps the difference is because one is measured in standard years while the other in Metric years?
