A whole slew of Android 10" tablets have been announced and are starting to ship, with a lot more due over the rest of this year. Many offer enhancements of the original iPad, 16x9 screens optimized for movies, USB ports, SD card slots, cameras, etc. The question is, since they are playing catch-up, can they manage to do BETTER than the iPad rather than just equal it?
A little personal history:
When the iPad was announced about a year ago, I was severely disappointed. I wanted a 10-12" tablet running OSX, not a big iPod Touch!
Based on my experience with my iPod Touch, I really wasn't expecting much out of the iPad. I mean those little apps are ok for 3.5" screens but for real work? Even my HTC EVO's 4.3" screen is too small for serious stuff.
However, after toying with my boss' iPad over the months, I decided that the iPad would make a great bedside computer. After all, what do most folks do with their computers? Let's use my retired wife as an example. She does web based email, surfs the web, watches movies and tv shows via Hulu and Netflix, reads eBooks, plays Farmville, Mafia Wars and some Pogo.com games.
Until now she's used my old 12" iBook for those tasks when in bed. However it has finally chimed its last boot chime.
So for Christmas, I got her a 16GB WiFi iPad. The only areas above where it lacks are the last three. There are apps for Farmville, and Pogo, but they don't offer everything that the web versions offer. The web versions won't work of course as they use Flash and Java, two widespread technologies that Steve Jobs hates. For everything else mentioned, the iPad is wonderful. Enough that I would like an iPad for myself, though I'll wait to see what the iPad 2 offers.
Over the past year, I've seen that a large number of iPad app developers have put in the extra effort to make their apps shine on the iPad.
Take Weatherbug Elite as an example. Yes I bought the paid version for my Touch. Yes, they now made it free and force ads on me, but that is another gripe for another post. The point is that after I bought my wife an iPad for Christmas, I installed my iPhone/iPod version of Weatherbug Elite on her iPad and it is a totally different program. The iPad mode puts the iPhone version to shame.
When it comes to small screens (my EVO's 4.3") and tiny screens (iPhone/iPod Touch's 3.5"), that extra .8" make a big difference in usability. Other than that though, the apps are pretty much the same across both Android and IOS. With my EVO, I get unlimited data as does anyone signing with Sprint today, while new AT&T and Verizon customers are crippled on the amount of data they get with their plans. The only thing that is really different between the two platforms is that the iPhone/Touch seems to have just a little bit better fit and finish when it comes to the user interface.
So with phones... my opinion is that the Android devices have only managed to equal IOS in the small screen world. They need to do much better in the tablet world if they really intend on grabbing market share.
There are a lot of things to like about the feature set of tablets like the Motorola Xoom. Then again, with the one year head start of the iPad, I don't see Android tablet apps being equal to iPad apps for a bit yet.
Will there be an Android tablet in my future? Possibly, around 2012 or 2013. In the mean time, I expect an iPad (1 or 2) in my possession this year.
